I was cooking the other day and checked one pot handle--it was cool so I grabbed the other one. That was a mistake. The other handle, which was in the corner of two tiled walls, burned my fingers and the palm of my hand. OOOO, it immediately started hurting.
I remembered one of those email forwards saying that you should put whipped egg whites on a burn. So I tried it. I quickly grabbed an egg and separated the yolk and the white and stuck my hand in the whites before even beating it. I left them in there a few minutes then beat the whites and stuck my fingers backed in. It took a few minutes but the burning sensation stopped.
My finger tips were still very tender to the touch. I let the egg whites dry on my hand and then I stuck my fingers back in the egg whites off and on for an hour or so.
Here's a photo of my fingertips a few hours after the incident. You can see where my middle finger started to blister. But the blister never formed. The dried egg white was tight on my skin--so I don't know if that is what prevented the blister from forming or what.
I looked it up on the Internet on various sites and I read that egg whites are not the appropriate treatment for burns and its just an old wives' tale. BUT I'm telling you it WORKED!! My hand healed so quickly. It is probably only good for certain types of burns but I'm going to continue to use it. I've burned myself 3 times in the kitchen in the last couple months and I've done it twice. The two times I did it, my hand was healed very quickly, no blisters (they were immediately starting to form) and the pain went away relatively quickly.
So next time you get burned, instead of reaching for the ice, try egg whites and let me know what you think.

I wish I would have known this two days ago when Ashton put his hand directly on the burner. It didn't seem to bother him too bad though, since he only cried for a few minutes.
Hope your hands get better soon! Good to know about the egg whites.
I once burned my hands deseeding some wickedly hot jalapenos. My hands felt like they were on FIRE and no amount of ice helped. I furiously searched the internet for remedies (none of which helped) until I found one that recommended instant hand sanitizer (the kind with alcohol). It was the only thing that worked, though relief only lasted a few minutes. I was dousing my hands in that stuff for DAYS. It took weeks to finally go away. Now I wear gloves when cutting jalapenos. :)
